The Ministry of Environment has announced its goal of planting two million trees in October, which is Reforestation month. The Ministry announced that 600 tree-planting activities have been planned, and some 15,000 volunteers will join tree-planting brigades organized by the Green Quisqueya Plan. Some 500 companies, institutions and organizations will also take part in the initiative to plant mahogany, Hispaniolan pine, cedar, oak, ceiba, cabirma, juan primero (paradise tree), mara, guayacan, candelon, olive, almond and hazelnut.
Environment Minister Ernesto Reyna made the announcement at a press conference also attended by businesspeople Jose Luis Corripio, Manuel Arsenio Urena, Melba Segura of Sur Futuro and Ginny Heinsen of Cedaf. Deputy minister of Forestry Resources Manuel Serrano, director of Quisqueya Verde Jose Enrique Baez, and deputy Armed Forces Minister Major General Israel Diaz were also present.
