The Peace Boat is visiting Santo Domingo on its 74th Global Peace Voyage, one of 27 stops since the ship set sail from the Japanese port of Yokohama on 19 July 2011 on a world tour that ends on 27 October 2011. The voyage has included a long stay in northern European countries including the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Finland and Norway, where participants learned about environmental sustainability and social welfare efforts. The final month of the voyage is being spent travelling through Latin America, with a focus on nonviolence and alternative models of economic development.
In Santo Domingo, ship participants planted a tree in Engombe, with the help of the Touristic Cluster of Santo Domingo.
The Peace Boat's first voyage was organized in 1983 by a group of Japanese university students as a creative response to government censorship of Japan's past military aggression in the Asia-Pacific. They chartered a ship to visit neighboring countries with the aim of learning first-hand about the war from those who experienced it and initiating people-to-people exchange.
Peace Boat believes that travel in itself can be a tool for positive social and political change, and seeks to create and implement best practices in responsible travel and what we call travel for peace and sustainability. Socio-political considerations rather than commercial interests largely determine their choice of destinations. Their partnerships with local organizations and travel agencies reflect the effort to utilize tourism in a progressive and educational form so as to contribute to global sustainability and peace.
The SS Oceanic has a draft of 8.6 meters, length of 238.4 meters, beam of 29.4 meters. Its total weight is 38,772 tons, and its navigation speed is 27 knots. The maximum passenger capacity of the vessel is 1550.
