Director of Prisons objects to appeal sentence

Director of Prisons Roberto Obando Prestol is considering filing his own appeal against a decision by the judge for the Execution of Sentences in San Cristobal, which allows convicted child killer Mario Jose Redondo Llenas to publish articles in the media. He said that this decision was an ill-fated precedent for the nation's prison system. According to El Nuevo Diario, Obando Prestol said that the laws covering prisoners only guarantee their basic rights. In another article in the same paper, the vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies Children and Adolescents Commission, Deputy Luisin Jimenez, harshly criticized the judge's decision. He said that Dominican society has yet to recover from the horrendous crime committed by the inmate. He said that the title of the first article should be: "How to kill a child with 38 stab wounds and still be alive after 15 years".

Redondo Llenas was sentenced to 30 years in jail for the murder of his 12-year old cousin in May 1996.
