After a hectic day in the Major Leagues, Dominican Jose Reyes of the New York Mets is the new National League Batting Champion. While many sport writers are wondering just how this came about, there is no doubt that one of the most exciting players in all of baseball is the very first Mets player to win the title. Reyes, who hit a bunt single in his first time at bat, was lifted from the game, apparently at his own request, in order to preserve his batting average of .337. He became the seventh Dominican to win the title, following in the footsteps of greats such as Mateo Rojas Alou and Rico Carty. Reyes with his average safe saw his rival Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers go 0-4 in his last game. Reyes also tied with Shaun Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies with 16 triples to lead the league. Jose Reyes is also the first New York Mets player to ever win a batting title in the New York Mets' team history. His last two weeks were hot and overall, Reyes had a very productive season. He played in 126 games, had 537 turns at bat, scored 101 runs, 44 runs batted in, 181 hits, 31 doubles, 16 triples and 7 home runs.
