I noticed a banner on the way back from the beach today that the old High Caribe disco is having a grand re-opening on Jan 5.

For those that do not know this is a large disco which shut down for renovations at least 2 years ago. It is located at the very far end of Pedro Clisante. Must use motoconcho or own wheels at night.

I doubt i will make the trip there very often.

I was riding my rented moto concho right there in Nov one morning around 10 am and picked up a hot chica walking all by herself. Gave her a ride into town and could have brough her back to the Garden. But did not want to because I just had got done with an all nighter and shot the load around 8 am.

I liked that place....the size.....the layout....the outdoor bar to catch some fresh air and get some food if you wanted some.....the feeling of not having everyone right on top of you....the small dance stage where chicas would hop up and show themselves...the different bars....

So even though this place is so far from the center of all the action, you guys are saying it had decent crowds back in the day?

Back in the day it was THE place to be. Decent crowds...always......just picture Classicos with more room and an outside bar to hang out at.

The motos were running up and down Clisante all night long. It took just minutes to get there.

I wonder if this will shift some of the heavy traffic from Classicos and Latinos down to the other end of the street. (Pedro Clisante) If so this could bring a lot more business to the other bars at the far end which looked to be quite empty last trip.

From Sosua News:

4 January 2007
Disco High Caribbean back to its former glory
The newly refurbished High Caribbean disco will be officially opened on Friday 5 January. Actually, this is a re-opening. Loyal visitors to Sosúa's nightlife will still remember the former glory of this disco. The owner, John Walter, has contracted a nationally known band to perform at the official opening night - the merengue group Pochy Familia La Cocoband. This is a band that not only has wonderful merengue songs in its repertoire, but also performs good salsa numbers. Their motto fits their style: 'Salsa con Coco'!
You may attend the opening night free of charge, and we hope that this evening will take you back to the good old days in High Caribbean!

I wonder if they will be charging an entrance fee since it says free admission first night. I wonder who they will charge? In the US normally women get in free. In the DR it seems like men get in for free. I guess we shall have to wait and see. It would be comical if places like this and Classicos started charging chicas to get in. Charge every chica at Classicos 100 pesos entry fee would get rid of most of the ones nobody picks up night after night anyhow.

3rd section from the top.

The newly renovated High Caribbean disco was due to open on this Friday evening, with a performance by La Cocaband, but apparently this has had to be postponed. The owner, John Walter, told us that it was not possible to get the renovations completed on time. The official opening has now been moved to 12 January. If we hear any more details then we'll publish them here in Sosúa-News.

Good thought. I know in Costa Rica at the Blue Marlin , the girls have to have their cedula, and on the busy nights I think they do have to pay a nominal entrance fee. Blue Devil, help me out on this, been a while since i been in the blue marlin..

Actually when Classicos first opened up, they charged admission, Come to think of it, I think at one point or another, X-Bar, the old Latinos and High Caribe all charged admission.

From Sosua News:

High Caribbean disco opens 19 January!

Huge banners have been hung over the streets to announce: 'High Caribbean opens its doors on Friday 19 January'. The text continues: 'History continues, good things don't change'.
We called the owner, John Walter, who told us that he is planning a huge spectacle on opening night. 'We are still negotiating with several famous merengue bands' he said. So the performers are being kept a secret.
In any case, entrance is free, and several motoconchos indicated that they are very pleased with the reopening of this well-known, now refurbished, disco. They hope to transport lots of enthusiastic dancers to this legendary nightspot - particularly young couples, because they usually give a good tip.

I was there on re-opening night. Chica I was with was knocked out with it but the jury is still out for me (the chica I was with last night in Classicos said she wouldn't bother to go there because there are "too many complications"). It is big, has inside and outside bars and a kind of water trough running through both bits which the chicas were calling "piscena" so maybe people are going to get in it from time to time (nobody that I saw did that night).

The most notable thing to me was a disctinct lack of bar staff and change, which makes me think the owner's reserves are allready getting low. It was a hassle getting drinks even though the place was by no means packed. Inside it is OK, not as flashy as Sea-crets or the new Latinos at the back of Sosua Life (which is a good thing for me). Music mixes Dominican and urban dance styles. Not enough people there to give it a really good atmosphere though (in contrast Classico was as packed as I've ever known it last night). A bit worrying if that was the opening night but there has been a lot of confusion about when it was re-opening.

As a footnote, Club X is now closed and, for all its neon signs, Sea-crets still has about as much life about it as the average morgue.

Although I have some great memories of high carib I don't think it will survive. With Latinos and clasico around chicas aren't gonna make the trek to High Carib. I mean lets face it they won't even walk to Sercrets which is a 2 min walk from clasicos what makes u think they are gona spend 20 pesos on a moto bike to get to High Carib. The 1am 2am cerfew doesn't help either.
If you put Sercres between latinos & clasicos I'm sure it would be packed too. This is why Latinos will survive. Location!!!! Chicas can go back and forth between latinos & clasicos within 30 seconds.

Secrets has so much potential. Stage in the back for concerts , small stage in front outside bar for small live shows. It's all about location though.

And things don't look to be getting any better. I went up again last night and there were just 43 people at 11.30pm (including all the staff and the DJ!). Inside and out the place easily has four or five times the capacity of Classicos so it was really like being in an empty room.

Worse still, not one unoccupied chica!!!

It was Sunday night of course but things were still busy at Latinos and, in particular, Classicos. I'll give it one more try later this week to see if things have picked up.

Here's a little information on the new disco High Caribbean Jef. Freddy is the man running things there. Freddy is aware of the ISOC website and is very interested in your thoughts and opinions about the club. Please keep the suggestions coming.

For now, the club will be open Thursday thru Sunday. They are in the works of getting 30 live-in chicas to work the club on a regular basis so mongers will always have a fresh supply of beauties to choose from. The club will provide them room and board. Feel free to call the club directly and ask for Freddy. He will answer all your questions. The phone number is 809-571-2508

10 pm , here I sit here in the internet cafe in the back of clasicos-club 59 place is packed already. Checked out High Caribean last night. There was a tipico band playing there and there was a sign for 150 pesos entrance. I asked the guy working the door to let me take a peak inside- not much doing - i told him Iīm not going in so he says go in for free- I go in. Didnīt really look like any renavation went on. same as it always was with that pool and the outside bar area. I would say there were about 60 to 75 people in there- not too much considering the size of the place, didnīt seem crowded. As far as the crowd, not too many chicas solo. What I did see mostly dominican couples dancing to the tipico band. I left after 45 minutes. The place does not have the feel it did back in the days sad to say.

There isn't going to be a high season anywhere in the Caribbean this year. You probably don't know being English and all but the US passed new regulations for US travelers requiring passports for all air travel outside of the US, whereas before you could go to the Caribbean, Mexico, & Canada with just a driver's license & birth certificate.

The Caribbean nations were not happy with the new law since only about 17-25% of Americans actually own a passport!

I cant understand why you wouldnt have one in the last year or so myself. I know a lot of states have crazy rules now for renewing your drivers license that make you want to have a passport. They have a points system and a passport rates as one item with the most points (4 out of the required 6). Possibly they did this in the last year or so to try and make people consider getting passports who knows. Apparently it didnt work so great because now they REALLY want you to have one for travel.

Im sure this has to do with the fact that they collect $50+ on each person applying for a passport and the fact that they can monitor peoples travel and any other information they can collect during this process for whatever master database they are keeping for homeland security.

Just speculation of course.....

Thunderstar might have hit it on the head with his statement but I am sure it is much more, such as Americans are, dare I say, ignorant of the rest of the world. Most don't bother learning another language much less 3,4, or 5+.

Some of my favorite examples of this are Americans that speak louder when someone doesn't speak English as if that will make the non-english speaking person understand or expect everyone else to speak English even in a foreign country. I have experienced this first hand several times in both Europe & the DR.

Finally as a American Catholic Bishop recently said after visiting some developing nations, Americans are deaf & blind when it comes to the rest of the world. Yes it's sad.

That is very odd that any form of ID is neccessary to renew your D/L, while I have only lived in two states, the ID requirements for renewal have never been more then your old D/L. I can understand ID requirements for a new D/L, that makes complete sense.

As for the money, yeah the government always wants more but as for the traveler's database, they can get that just as easily from your D/L then from a passport.

In Texas you can renew your driver's license online. If you go to the Department of Public Safety you have to show your Social Security Card to renew your license. (WTF) I got my passport in Dec. 05, cost $100.00, the DR was suppose to require a PP Jan. 06 as part of the Caribbean Free Trade Act but they keep stalling. Before then, every place I wanted to go to only required a driver's license and birth certificate.

Some of my favorite examples of this are Americans that speak louder when someone doesn't speak English as if that will make the non-english speaking person understand or expect everyone else to speak English even in a foreign country. I have experienced this first hand several times in both Europe & the DR.

Brits do exactly the same, although the more cultured among us do occasionally stick an "o" on the end of English words when dealing with latins. The French meanwhile will never admit to speaking a word of English, even though must of us reckon they are all fluent at birth!

Well gents - just got back to the UK after two great weeks in paradise!

Checked out High Caribe twice - It was poor both nights. Sund 21st - at midnight it had 30 people in - including me and the Mrs!
The following friday at midnight 30 - again only 40 people.

Whilst I would have loved to pick the place up brick by brick and put in it in the centre of the high street here at home - I cant see it working now where it is in Sousa.

This is ment to be high season right now - NOWHERE was overley busy in Sousa????

Worrying times for the business in the North Coast.

Just catching up on board info - full report to follow!

Dan
PS - LONG LIVE PASSIONS - TROPICANA BAR IS CRAPPY CRAPPY CRAPPY

Sosua is pretty busy these days, but High Caribe is to far from the town center. Last night, both Latino Club and Classico was packed early, and I mean realy packed, there was way too many people innside.

Oh shit a Brit talking about the union jack
I was talking about the St George Cross (flag of England). I jacked the union decades ago. I don't want to be associated with imperialists, Scots, Welsh, or (least of all) fucking potato eaters! :) Actually, you're a good man, DT. Where else could I visit an American website, click on "Live Football" and arrive at information on ... football (and not on some parochial minority so-called "sport")? I was going to report a malfunction to you when I read "Real 0 Levante 1" but on checking this morning it seems to be correct.

next thing he will be singing "God save the queen"
I can't sing and I am a republican (with a small "r")

talking about the sun never setting....

I haven't seen the sun for three days here. I am getting desperate to come "home" to the DR but I have to keep my head and work through my gameplan. I hope to be settled in by this time next year.

I am a huge "real" football fan so what is why we have that feature, glad you enjoy it. Actually we always had the feature but buried in the old Tools menu.

I was referring to "The sun never setting on the empire"
