On a stop in Paris during his three-week European tour, former President and PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia criticized the present administration, calling it the most corrupt in the country's history, as reported in El Nacional. Mejia said that a mafia operates from the Presidential Palace, directing corruption and enjoying impunity under the aegis of President Leonel Fernandez. Mejia said that in a new Presidency, he would take everyone who has profited from their posts to court, regardless of their status as politicians.

He said that Danilo Medina is as much to blame as President Fernandez for having plunged the country into the current levels of poverty, insecurity and anxiety, as reported in El Nacional.

He said the Dominican people are paying the price of the consequences of corruption driven by the ruling PLD.

Mejia is in France to campaign for the vote of expatriate Dominicans. The JCE has said the expat vote could make the difference in the 2012 presidential election.

Prior to his stay in Paris, Mejia visited Italy.

In Italy he toured prefabricated housing manufacturing plants in Padua and Verona, and discussed problems Dominican expats have in Italy. He also attended a gala dinner hosted by Italian tourism and farm investors.

According to news reports, his delegation includes Manuel Duran, Hernani Salazar, Wellington Arnaud, Ramon Emilio Jimenez Collie, Luis Mejia, Rafael Cabrera, Omar Elias, Major General Carlos Luciano Diaz Morfa and Carlos Guzman.

He travels on to Switzerland for a visit to Geneva on Thursday.
