The DR Drug Control authorities say that the cocaine that was detected in a shipment of vegetables being sent to New York via Cibao International Airport out of Santiago weighed 22 kilos and 780 grams. The DNCD informed the drugs were camouflaged in 196 bags of cundiamor (bitter melon) and in 81 of yautia (Xanthosoma tubers, known as malanga). The illegal shipment was discovered by Specialized Security Corps and Customs Department agents at the Cibao airport earlier this week.
The authorities arrested Rafael Humberto Jimenez Florentino, Leudy Ramon Paulino and Luis Manuel Romano Arias, who transported the goods to the airport on board a Daihatsu truck. The DNCD said the drugs had been packed in La Vega. The drug had been carefully inserted into the vegetable and the root.
