President Leonel Fernandez has announced that he will be on board the test ride of the second line of the metro on 27 February, Independence Day. He promised the Metro would be in operation before the end of his second consecutive term in government in August 2012. The government reports that the second line of the Metro, which cost more than US$700 million, will run from Avenida Luperon with Duarte to Calle Padre Castellanos, as reported in Diario Libre. Last week, the PLD majority Senate approved a new US$230 million loan for the completion of the Metro.
President Fernandez announced that the tunnel under Ortega y Gasset Avenue, which is expected to facilitate north-south traffic in Santo Domingo, would be inaugurated in January. The tunnel, which cost US$55 million, was built by Odebrecht, the Brazilian contractor company. The Brazilian company works are built with financing of the Brazilian export corporation to the Dominican Republic.
