Enthusiastic crowds of thousands of people gathered on Sunday for a march for 4% of GDP for education. Dressed in yellow and sporting the symbolic yellow umbrellas, children and adults alike walked the 3kms from the state university to Independence Park, an hour and a half slow walk. Coalicion Educacion Digna, a civil society movement that is pressuring the government to reduce corruption to increase funding for education, organized the event.

The group marched in front of the Ministry of Education and placed yellow banners on the gate in demand that the government comply with Law 66-97 that orders that 4% of the GDP or 16% of the National Budget should be allocated to education. Maria Teresa Cabrera, a former president of the Dominican Public School Teachers Association, spoke in representation of Coalicion Educacion Digna.

She declared: "We are calling for the 4% because it is a legal and moral obligation of the state and our society, because we, every one one of us, has the right to a life with dignity."

The Fernandez administration has allocated 2.5% of the GDP to education in the 2012 national Budget.
