Be careful with 3D eyeglasses, says Tomas Vargas, the president of the Institute Against Blindness from Glaucoma, a center that treats glaucoma cases. The physician is warning that to achieve the 3D effect, the glasses force viewers to focus on things in the foreground (which causes eyes to converge) and distance (which causes them to separate) simultaneously. He explains that the glasses distributed in cinemas are passive, and cause fewer problems, while the ones sold for home use run on batteries that emit infrared radiation that is harmful to humans. He warns that prolonged use of active eyewear used for viewing 3D television may cause damage to eyesight.
