In yesterday's news, the media discussed the size of the budget and how much money was assigned to each of the government agencies. In today's El Caribe, the reporters take a closer look and point out that over 40% of the budget will be handled by just four institutions or agencies. According to Hector Linares and Martin Polanco, the lucky four are: Education, Public Health, Public Works and the Presidency. These four will handle 43.8% of the RD$430 billion in the budget for 2012.

It is heartening to see that Public Health will receive almost 11% of the budget and Education and Higher Education will see major increases in their funding. Public Works will have the fifth largest share of the budget and the President will enjoy some RD$45 billion or about 10.5% of the budget, and this is 22% higher than last year. Of course the Presidency dispenses funding for such things as the Office of the First Lady, the Office of Supervising Engineers for State Projects, the Social Plan, and several social subsidy programs overseen by the Vice President.

However, the greatest single item in the budget is the one assigned to "the Administration of the public debt and financial assets" which will swallow up 25% of the budget.
