The Fernandez government has assigned RDR$108.9 million to security along the 14.6 kilometers of the first line of the Santo Domingo Metro. For the border security along the 313-kilometer north-south border with Haiti, best known for smuggling of people, drugs, arms, goods, the government has allocated RD$76.8 million, as reported in acento.com.do
The Fernandez government allocated RD$31.5 million towards port security at 12 national ports. The reporter comments that the budgets are especially low considering the constant pressure to combat drug and arms trafficking.
Acento reports that 75% of the budget of the Specialized Ground Border Security Corps (CESFRONT) goes on wages and meals for personnel, 15% for equipment and fuel and 10% for operations. Some 2,000 men are stationed along the north-south border with Haiti, and 70% earn less than RD$5,000 a month.
