Continuing the discussion on the causes of the rising waters of Lake Enriquillo and the neighboring Lake Azuei in Haiti, the commission of engineers from the US Army told a television audience that more research is needed to establish the causes of the problem. The research team appeared on the state TV station, CERTV yesterday to try and explain some of their findings in the region.

El Nuevo Diario reports that basically the teams have said more research is needed into what they describe as a very complex system of hydrological structures that include the lake itself, its former connection to the sea, and all the river basins in the area, especially that of the Yaque del Sur River.

The researchers pointed out that the lake has experienced rising and falling levels, primarily due to rainfall, over long periods of time.

David Enfield, an oceanographer from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA), said that 6,000 years ago the lake was connected to the Caribbean Sea though the area now occupied by the Cabral Lagoon, the city of Barahona, and surrounding areas. He said that this area is now the dividing line between two major hydrological basins: Enriquillo and the Yaque del Sur River. Although there is no short-term solution for the rising waters, the team of experts will continue to assist INDRHI engineers in seeking a practical solution to the problem.

Just recently, hydrology experts pointed to the opportunity for power generation created by the rising waters.
