The president of the Chamber of Deputies and the head of the National Drug Control Department, Abel Martinez and Rolando Rosado Mateo, have reiterated their commitment to work together to stiffen punishments for anyone involved in crime. They said that they did not want to leave any cracks in the laws, because "as happens frequently, someone is arrested and accused of trafficking kilos of cocaine or of bringing a shipment into the country, and then we find out that there is no file in the justice system or that the accused are out on bail, probably committing the same crime," according to the Santiago legislator. The meeting between the legislator and the DNCD officer also dealt with a proposal to modify law 50-88 because they have found that 96% of those charged under this law go free with "certain speed".
