The resignation of the director of the computer center at the Central Electoral Board (JCE) has caused unease in several political parties that are expressing concerns that this could affect the transparency of the upcoming presidential election. The 2012 election is expected to be strongly contested as the ruling party candidate and opponent former President Hipolito Mejia are expected to go head to head.
Diario Libre reported that yesterday representatives of three of the political parties that will see action in the presidential election next May demanded that the Central Electoral Board Plenary clear up in the briefest possible time the complaint that there is a computer center parallel to the General Administration of Information, due to the uncertainties that this could create about the credibility of the process.
The complaint was made by the former administrator general of the IT center at the JCE, Miguel Angel Garcia, in his letter of resignation sent to the Plenary of the organization on 26 September.
PRD secretary general Orlando Jorge Mera described the situation as "extremely worrisome for the process, because the area of information (computers) is the nerve center of the election processes." He said that his party is in permanent session and will establish its position on the JCE in a formal document.
"I believe that the Central Electoral Board should make every effort to make transparent all of the situation created in the computer area because it is in their own best interests, for the sake the credibility of the process, that they explain everything that is happening," said Jorge Mera. The PRSC organizational secretary Ramon Rogelio Genao and the secretary general of the Alliance for Democracy, Carlos Sanchez expressed similar concerns. Genao demanded that the Plenary of the JCE issue a strong statement so that the specter of fraud and the lack of credibility in the election results do not reappear.
