Las Carreras Avenue in Santiago de los Caballeros has been converted into an express lane in order to speed up vehicular traffic in the historic center of the city and contribute to fuel savings. The Mayor of Santiago has also ordered the signage of the street to guide the drivers who use the avenue every day. Starting now, the drivers cannot park on either side of Las Carreras between 7 and 9 in the morning and 5 and 7 in the evenings.
The director of the Santiago Municipal Transit Department, Ramon Cabrera, said that they are also working on the synchronization of all the traffic lights along the main streets of the downtown area. He said that they have been working with the public transport unions in order to detour the units from the avenue in order to prevent traffic jams at some intersections such as Del Sol, Espana, Cuba, Sanchez and Restauracion.
