Born a Frenchman, but Brazilian and Afro-American by adoption, he lived through almost all the 20th Century.
Most famous for his portraits of Black culture, American as well as African, he was also known as a sorcerer, messenger and bridge between two worlds. He was also an artist, writer and anthropologist. He is recognized for his contributions to Afro-Bahian culture in Brazil. The exhibition at the National Gallery at the Palacio de Bellas Artes opens on Tuesday, 4 October at 7:30pm. The exhibition will last until 30 October.
