President Leonel Fernandez visited the northeastern Cibao town of Pimentel yesterday, for the formal inaugural ceremony of the expansion of the La Electricidad de Santiago (Laesa) power generation plant. The expansion, which cost US$53 million and was financed by the governmental BanReservas, adds 51 megawatts to the plant's generation capacity, for a total 111 megawatts.

The expansion now opens the possibility to generate power with fuel oil or natural gas. Celso Marranzini, vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) also attended the event. Laesa president Roberto Camino said that in its first phase the company put 32 megawatts online, followed by 28 megawatts and now 51 megawatts. He said that in the next two years the company expects to convert the plant to combined cycle production. He said Laesa has invested US$140 million in power generation.
