The Coalicion Educacion Digna, a civil society movement that is lobbying for the government to increase funding for improvements in public education, organized a series of visits yesterday to 30 embassies and consulates in the country to deliver a document outlining the reasons for their campaigning. The campaigners paid visits to the embassies of Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Spain, Switzerland, UK, US, the Vatican, South Korea and Venezuela in Santo Domingo.

Coalition members also visited the offices of the World Bank and the United Nations, the IDB, the European Union, JICA, USAID, AECID and other international and multilateral organizations in Santo Domingo. During the visit to the UN, group spokesman Octavio Figueroa called for better and more policies for integral welfare of the population, as reported in Hoy.

The Coalition has been behind a nationwide drive to motivate the government to comply with Law 66-97 that establishes an assignment of 4% of GDP or 16% of the National Budget to public education. In the 2012 National Budget, the Fernandez administration budgeted 2.5% of GDP for education.
