The president of Hogares Crea, a non-profit organization that runs drug rehabilitation centers nationwide, has warned that the influence of drug trafficking has reached the point where 10% of the addicts they treat are minors, including the case of a six-year old child, as reported in Listin Diario. Leopoldo Diaz said the child is receiving treatment at their center in Guasumal in Santiago. A further 18 minors are also receiving treatment at the center, the oldest being 14 years old.
Diaz favors the creation of specialized courts to hear drug trafficking cases as a way of combating the scourge. Drug trafficking is considered to be the main reason for rising crime in the Dominican Republic.
