United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for greater fairness and transparency in the distribution of wealth in Latin America. Speaking at the "Pathways to Prosperity" meeting in Santo Domingo yesterday, she said that her nation takes these factors into consideration when distributing resources. Clinton was taking part in a panel discussion on "New Opportunities for Development." The panel called for more attention to the region, which is the US's principal trade partner, and Clinton recognized this but noted the great unevenness in social and economic levels in the hemisphere. The panel also included the secretary general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, the vice-president for the private sector of the Inter-American Development Bank, Steven Puig, and the executive director of ECLAC, Alicia Barcena.

Clinton announced a US$17.5 million donation to support and fund development projects under the "Pathways to Prosperity" umbrella, while pointing out that "growth is not the only goal." She added that growth should be reflected in the middle class and by helping more people to emerge from poverty.

The Dominican Republic and Honduras will be the first nations to preside over the first pillar of this initiative, which will push for financing and marketing assistance for micro-, small- and medium-sized businesses.

Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Morales Troncoso said that the "Pathways to Prosperity" gathering was a common platform for the countries in the region that are committed to democracy and open markets to promote growth, prosperity and social justice.
