Deputy director of the Metro construction office (OPRET), engineer Leonel Carrasco has announced that a new bridge will be built across the Ozama River. This one will be parallel to the Puente de la 17. The new bridge seeks to improve east-west traffic flow in Santo Domingo.

In a progress report on the construction of the second line of the metro, Carrasco said that the most difficult problems they have had to face were the condition of the ground and continued rains that have been falling this year causing construction delays. He said one of the most challenging stretches was from Ave. Winston Churchill to Gregorio Luperon, especially at the Km. 9 level where expansive clay ground meant that at one point they had to dig down 120 feet to find firm terrain for the passing of the train. He said that it was one of the most expensive stretches they have built. Carrasco said the experience accumulated in the construction of the first line has enabled the construction to move ahead at a faster pace, as reported in El Caribe.

President Leonel Fernandez recently announced he would ride the metro-2 test drive on 27 February, in time for his third state of the nation address. He also said the metro would be operational for passengers prior to the end of his term on 16 August 2012.
