On Saturday the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) announced the seizure of a 336-kilo cocaine shipment camouflaged in medical equipment that was being exported in a container of a La Romana based company through the Multimodal Caucedo Port to France. DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron said that the drugs were seized by the Armed Force intelligence division, Specialized Port Security Corps (CESEP), National Investigations Department (DNI) and Customs officers, as reported by DNCD director, Rolando Rosado Mateo. The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also participated in the detection of the shipment.
The DCND says that with the most recent shipment, the DCDN has seized over 1,434 kilos "in recent hours" including a 1,098-kilo haul confiscated from a house in Alma Rosa. In that case, Modesto Araujo Paniagua, who had been deported from the US, was arrested. Judge Rosanna Feliz ordered three months preventive custody for Araujo Paniagua. Araujo Paniagua was described as a 54-year old mechanic who was arrested at the residence where the drug was confiscated. He was carrying documentation that identified him as Eduardo L. Jose, a resident of New York. As reported in Listin Diario he had been deported from the US in 1992 after serving a sentence for drug trafficking.
