The Cerro de Maimon mining concession will be exploited as a nickel mine shortly and the Globestar Mining Co. expects to extract over half a million tons of nickel from the mine over the next ten to sixteen years. The company, whose local name is the Dominican Mining Corporation (Cormidom), also extracts gold, silver and copper from the mine.
According to Hoy newspaper, the company will use a technological model that guarantees good environmental management, which will allow for the rehabilitation of the eco-system in 20 years. The mine will provide 150 permanent jobs and another 200 indirect jobs for a period of at least 10 years. The opencast mine was announced at the Maimon Cooperative Hall in the presence of many community leaders.
