The insurance companies have paid out around RD$216 million to their policyholders for stolen vehicles from January until August this year. The average per car cost was about RD$1 million for each of the 216 insured with this type of coverage who asked to be paid.

The number, far from being low, is important to the insurance sector, since according to their statistics, they paid for 192 vehicles for the same period in 2010, representing a new low in the report of stolen vehicles after they received 283 claims in 2009 over the same timeframe.

The number shown by the 15 largest insurance companies in the country, affiliated to the Dominican Chamber of Insurers and Re-insurers (Cadoar), represents only 20% of the vehicular robberies registered in the Dominican Republic. This crime is aimed at dismantling vehicles for selling the used parts on the market at lower than OEM prices. These robberies sometimes include murdering the victim and the use of these vehicles by police officers.

Data from the Police archives show that from January to September 1,365 vehicles were stolen, most of which were cars, pickup trucks and SUVs.

According to Diario Libre, Toyota brand vehicles are most likely to be stolen and other Japanese brands, including cars, SUVs, and pickups are the preferred choice of thieves and the organized gangs.

The Department of Investigation of Stolen Vehicles (Plan Piloto) is also registering an increasingly higher number of reports of stolen Nissan brand vehicles.
