The Dominican Cardiology Foundation (FDC) has won the Gran Premio Brugal Cree en Su Gente and the Brugal health sector award from the rum company. Dr. Hector Mateo, president of the FDC, received the donations worth RD$2.5 million. The event took place at the Casa San Pablo in Santo Domingo. Franklin Baez Brugal, president of the Fundacion Brugal, outlined the philosophy behind the award.
Other institutions that received prizes at the awards ceremony were: Hogar de Ancianos San Francisco de Asis of Avenida Independencia in the social assistance category, the Junta de Asociaciones Campesinas Rafael Fernandez Dominguez of the northwestern provinces for community development, the Centro Cultural Altos de Chavon for art and culture, the Federacion de Caficultores de la Region Sur for environmental protection, and Escuela de Educacion Espeical Rayo de Sol for education.
Laura del Pilar Peynado, a professor at New York University, was given a special recognition. Peynado, a Dominican immigrant to the US, received a prize for her work in the NY public school system.
