The National Judicial Council (CNM) has held its second round of interviews with another 22 of the candidates to fill the seats on the Higher Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

Hoy newspaper highlights the presentations by Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Luciano Pichardo, and Nancy M. Joaquin Guzman, and Manuel Hernandez Peguero, a former District Attorney for the National District. In general, today's press also noted that some of the candidates seemed a bit lost and needed to consult the Constitution in order to answer questions.

In order to begin the process, President Leonel Fernandez and the other members of the CNM entered the Caryatides Salon of the Presidential Palace at 6:25 p.m. and 20 minutes later began the first interview with jurist Juan Bautista Feliz Perez.

Diario Libre said that the other candidates interviewed in the first session last night, which ended at 8:30pm, were Manuel Emilio Galvan Luciano, Dagoberto Antonio Gomez Cabral, Bienvenida Gomez Echavarria, Alfredo Gonzalez Perez, John Newton Guilliani Valenzuela, Maria Altagracia Hernandez Garcia, Inocencio Cruz Hernandez Infante, Jose Manuel Hernandez Peguero, Carmen Imbert Brugal and Francisco Ramon Infante Pena.

During the second part of the session which began at 9:15pm and ended at 11:20pm, the CNM interviewed Roman Jaquez Liranzo, Cesar Antonio Jasmin Rosario, Luis Omar Jimenez Rosa, Nancy Maria Joaquin Guzman, Rafael Luciano Pichardo, Miguel Angel Luna Imbert, Julio Cesar Madera Arias, Carmen Mancebo Acosta, Mario Nelson Mariot Torres, Rafael Matias Rodriguez, Victor Manuel Emilio and Jorge Eligio Mendez. Although no reasons were given, Hilda Gonzalez Rijo, Noris Rosaura Hernandez Victoria and Francisco Ramon Infante Pena did not appear for their interviews.

One exceptional case was Luciano Pichardo, the first vice-president of the Supreme Court of Justice who will end his time on the high court since he is over the retirement age of 75 as established in the Judiciary Law 327-98. When it was his turn to be presented, President Fernandez told him that in his case there was a singular and unique situation, because he was on the podium "quite simply to comply with formalities, you do not have to convince anyone."

The CNM has held two public hearings so far, in which 43 aspiring candidates for the posts of magistrates on the TSE have been interviewed. There are a total of 89 candidates. The public hearings will continue next Saturday, with two sessions, one at 9am and another at 3pm.
