In the presence of descendants of the Admiral of the Ocean Seas, Christopher Columbus, the city of Santo Domingo celebrated the discovery of America 519 years ago. Much of the ceremony was held at the Columbus Lighthouse in Santo Domingo East, with spectacular parachute jumps by members of the Air Force. Monsignor Rafael Bello Peguero opened the casket that contains the bones of the discoverer. Attending the ceremony were Deputy Minister of Culture Lourdes Camilo de Cuello, a 20th generation descendant of Columbus, Don Manuel Colon de Carvajal y Osborne, and the Marquis de Castell Florite, Juan Lago Novas.
