Dozens of women dressed in bridal gowns marched through the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) campus yesterday in protest against domestic violence, particularly against women. This violence is not only physical but also social and economic, according to the marchers, who called for improved public policies for tackling the problems that seem to be on the increase.

UASD Gender Institute director Agnes Mirqueya Mateo Perez and television personality Anabel Alberto spoke to reporters during the march. They said that the event, which was widely covered by television and the press sought to create consciousness of the serious nature of the issue. The annual march is held on the anniversary of the murder of Gladys Ricart who was killed by her former boyfriend the very day she was going to marry another man. Her tragic death inspired dozens of women to dress in bridal gowns and parade through the campus.
