The mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros, Jose Enrique Sued, has announced that two technicians from Spain are to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of a tramway or urban rail system in Santiago. Called the Ferrocarril Metropolitano en Santiago, the rail system idea will be evaluated by experts from the Spanish firm of Ferrocarriles de Via Estrecha (FEVE). The narrow gauge rail system in Spain is a state-run enterprise by the Spanish Ministry of Development. According to Mayor Sued, the rail system could provide services to over a million passengers per year. Angel Buitrago and Andres Garcia will arrive in Santiago on Wednesday to look at the infrastructure and roadways that will contribute to the construction of the rail system. The Santiago system will connect the international airport with the city and is expected to cost a fifth of the amount being spent on Santo Domingo's controversial Metro system. According to Sued, the entire project will be financed by Vasca Norgestion and the municipality would "not be spending one cent". Norgestion is described on the Internet as a business consulting firm with offices in Bilbao.
