Inter-American Development Bank president Luis Alberto Moreno has praised the Dominican Republic's economic performance during the current financial global crisis, as reported in El Dia. Moreno, who was speaking at the opening of the 12th Biarritz Forum in Santo Domingo, stated that in the midst of the international global crisis the Dominican economy grew by 7.8%, well above the regional average of 4.2%.
As reported in El Dia, Moreno said that the countercyclical program implemented by the Fernandez administration was the tool that had achieved this result. He said there had been good macro-economic management that had been validated by the markets, with improvements in the country's sovereign risk rating and a decline in the cost of financing. He recalled that 57% of Dominican exports are to the US and oil is a principal component of Dominican imports. Moreno also praised the Dominican public response to the earthquake in Haiti, saying that this support would enable the Haitian people to unleash all their creativity and productive energies.
The forum is taking place at the Central Bank through Friday with discussions on the culture of a new regional development model and governance. The event is being organized by Didier Borotra, Senator and Mayor of Biarritz, France. The key participants are Miguel Angel Crespo of the Basque Autonomous Government Cross-Border Cooperation, Spanish Senate leader Javier Rojo, French foreign relations secretary Edouard Courtial, European Parliament deputy Jose Ignacio Salafranca Sanchez and Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon. Other prominent attendees include former Colombian President Ernesto Samper, IDB president Luis Alberto Moreno and former Costa Rican President Jose Maria Figueres.
