The Navy arrested 110 Cubans and 593 Dominicans and confiscated 152 boats between January and September this year. A Navy report reveals that 21 groups of illegal boat traffickers were arrested during this period, under the command of Navy Chief Vice Admiral Nicolas Cabrera Arias.

The arrests include 22 foreigners, including two Puerto Ricans who had traveled to the Dominican Republic on a speedboat to pick up 13 Cubans. The operations took place at 25 sites, including beaches and rivers.

The information was compiled by the Navy M2 Intelligence Division. Department chief Navy Captain Antonio Fani Cabral said that at least 71 organizers and boat captains were arrested in the first nine months of the year. The Navy is fighting people smuggling, drug and contraband merchandise, illegal fishing and violation of Dominican waters by foreigners.

As well as the 110 Cubans, a further 22 foreigners were arrested, including Haitian, Indian, Venezuelan and Guatemalan nationals who sought to use the Dominican Republic as a transshipment point for traveling to Puerto Rico illegally by sea. The foreigners include 21 women, who were said to have entered via the Haitian border, or under the pretense of being investors.

Most of the arrests were made in Boca Chica, San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana, Higuey, Miches and Sabana de la Mar, in addition to Nagua, Sanchez, Samana, Rio San Juan, Manzanillo and Montecristi.
