The Dominican Republic is competing with 229 athletes in the Guadalajara 16th Pan American Games that open in Guadalajara, Mexico today with an estimated 7,100 athletes from 42 nations in the Americas. Cesar Pina Toribio wished the delegation the best of success at the Presidential Palace yesterday and promised RD$400,000 to athletes who win gold, RD$200,000 to those bringing home silver, and RD$100,000 to bronze medalists. The Dominican flag bearer will be karate athlete, Gustavo Dionisio.
Five Pan Am gold medalists and two Olympic medalists are on the team n Gabriel Mercedes (silver in Tae kwon do in the 2008 Beijing Olympics) and Felix Sanchez (gold in track and field 2004Athens Olympics). The DR team seeks to at least equal last Pan Am Rio de Janeiro 2007 performance, when the team won 29 medals (six gold, six silver and 17 bronze) and was ranked ninth in overall points.
Past gold winners in Pan Am games are Yudelkis Contreras in weightlifting, Lin Ju in table tennis, Wendy Cruz in cycling and Gustavo Dionisio in karate.
The DR will compete track and field, swimming, badminton, basketball, handball, baseball, bowling, boxing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, karate, weight lifting, wrestling, modern pentathlon, racquetball, softball, tae kwon do, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, sailing and volleyball.
