An investigative report in today's Listin Diario focuses on the fate of Dominican rivers and the threat to the population. Reporter Adriana Peguero says that the rivers' demise affects electricity generation, farming and drinking water production in the DR. She writes that human intervention is one of the main causes for the deforestation of the river basins. The newspaper quotes environmental expert Eleuterio Martinez as saying that the river basins have suffered the effects of deforestation, unsustainable farming practices, clearing of land for cattle ranching, as well as commercial exploitation of riverbed raw materials for construction.
Many rivers have dried out, but the waters return after heavy rainfall, causing flooding and affecting human lives, especially as people tend to build houses in the areas left behind by the rivers when they dry out.
