Although Winston Rizik Rodriguez escaped while serving a 96-month sentence in a Florida jail for narcotics violations, he has inexplicably received local judiciary support, even at the Supreme Court of Justice level.

El Dia reports that Rizik has been released from several court hearings, including a request for extradition, and is now again being tried in Higuey for two murders. He is known as El Don and El Gallero due to his cockfighting business activities.

Despite having been sentenced for drug trafficking in the US, the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, with resolution No. 14 of 25 February 2009, rejected the request for extradition and called for all his assets to be returned to him.

El Dia reports that engineer Wilson Alejandro Amparo Luna was murdered when contract killers confused him with Rizik Rodriguez.

Last week Rizik was arrested for the murders of Marcos Figuereo and Vladimir Paulino Consuegra. The authorities said the crime was linked to cocaine trafficking and his lawyers managed to get his case to be heard in San Cristobal, where the courts have been the subject of recent scrutiny for releasing suspects. As reported in El Dia, the arrest order had been issued a year earlier, but had not been executed, and Rizik operated as normal.

When Rizik was released in San Cristobal on the grounds of "insufficient evidence," prosecutors in La Altagracia ordered another arrest using an arrest order that had been issued in March. Higuey prosecutor Lucas Evangelista Perez ordered the arrest of Winston Rizik Rodriguez (El Gallero) who is accused of murdering Amador Cabrera Sanchez and Carlos Jimenez Silvestre. Rizik is suspected of being the mastermind behind both deaths.
