The Dominican Republic has won two gold medals at the Mexico Pan American Games so far, both in tae kwon do. Gabriel Mercedes, who won silver in the Beijing Olympics, won the first gold in 58-kilogram division. Mercedes defeated Mexican Damian Villa in an 8-7 combat. Johanny Jean Bartemit defeated Cuban Angel Mora 8-7 in the finals of the 68-kilogram division, to secure the second gold. Mercedes had defeated him in the Taekwondo Cup in Copenhagen Worlds.

As of Sunday, 16 October, the DR was in sixth place in the medals ranking of the Pan Am Games behind the US (26), Brazil (13), Colombia (6), Canada (9) and Mexico (8).
