In another article by Hoy's Loyda Pena, the reporter looks at what the United Nations Population Fund considers to be the unacceptable rate of adolescent pregnancies in the Dominican Republic, nearly that of African countries and which might even be higher than in Haiti.

According to the UNPF representatives Sonia Vasquez and Jeremy Freehill, one in five Dominican adolescents has been pregnant, one of the highest levels in the region. They warned about a local culture that practically encourages pregnancies.

Their appearance on national television was part of the UNPF program called "Action Seven Billion" which talks about how the world population will reach seven billion people on 31 October. They stressed in their talk that "society is condemning an adolescent to enter sexual relations."
