PLD Monte Plata deputy Juan Hubieres, better known as the head of the Fenatrano mini-bus union, was back in Congress yesterday, pushing his cause. Hubieres was injured when police and judicial authorities clashed with his members and people who had invaded property with his support. The city government of Santo Domingo East brought in the authorities to evict the trespassers.

In a report in today's Diario Libre, Hubieres admitted that following a first eviction on 4 May, he had arranged for more families to invade the property at Altos de Brisas del Este, which the city government claims as public space.

Yesterday, Bienes Nacionales, Ministry of Environment and the Santo Domingo East city government defended the legality of the eviction.

Hubieres had set up a station supplying fuel to his Fenatrano units with a 10,000 gallons storage facility on the property.

Speaking in the Chamber of Deputies, Hubieres nevertheless defended the occupation of the public property.

Listin Diario highlights that the area was declared a public space by Decree 381-92 of 31 December 1992 during the government of President Joaquin Balaguer, again on 387-03 signed by President Hipolito Mejia on 25 August 2003, and a third by President Leonel Fernandez on 16 September 2004.
