The PLD-majority Chamber of Deputies has fast tracked the second reading of the 2012 National Budget for RD$430 billion. The deputies, like their colleagues in the PLD-majority Senate, chose not to modify the bill as was received from the Executive Branch. The proposal passed with 83 votes in favor and 57 against. It now returns to the President for signing into law.
PRD General Secretary Orlando Jorge Mera said that the party could submit a recourse for violation of the Constitution because the bill modifies several fundamental laws. The Constitution requires a two-thirds congressional majority for changes to fundamental laws. El Caribe reported that the Deputies only took 15 minutes to pass the second reading.
