Cataract operations using the femtosecond laser were presented during the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology Congress in Oviedo by Dr. Juan Francisco Batlle Pichardo (jbattle@centrolaser.net).
Hundreds of Spanish physicians attended the presentation, which was described as the most important in the congress. The Catalys tool is only in use at the Centro Laser in Santo Domingo. It was developed by the Optimedica company of Santa Clara, California with technology designed by NASA engineers, as reported in Hoy. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only recently approved the commercial use of the tool in cataract surgeries. During the congress Dr. Batlle highlighted the precision that the tool gives surgeons, enabling the restoration of sight to hundreds of patients. He is a graduate of Duke University in medicine, and president of the National Committee for Prevention of Blindness.
