The judges of the seventh and fifth Courts of Instruction of the National District have issued decrees to open trials against three groups of defendants accused in a large-scale fraud case involving millions of pesos owed to the Department of Taxes. This is certainly one of the first times that people have gone to trial for tax evasion and the case against companies and individuals totals some RD$1.5 billion pesos. According to El Nuevo Diario, some former employees of the DGII and their relatives are connected to businesses involved in the case. A foreign national, Pavel Storkan, is also going on trial for millions of pesos in a case involving tax receipts. These cases are so important that the Supreme Court of Justice decided that the case should be heard at the Second Court of Instruction in the National District.
