President Leonel Fernandez was in La Vega yesterday to launch the resumption of construction of the Guaigui Dam, under the National Hydraulic Resources Institute. The project is estimated to cost US$115.2 million, of which the government has borrowed US$78 million from the Deutsche Bank A.G. commercial bank. Speaking at the ceremony, INDRHI director Frank Rodriguez said that the dam would supply water to La Vega for 20 years and would irrigate 86,459 tareas of rice and other crops by supplying the Las Rosas and Hato Viejo water channels. He added that it would generate 12.5-gigawatt hours of power, resulting in import savings of 22,482 barrels of oil, approximately US$1.5 million a year.
