President Leonel Fernandez attended yesterday's inauguration of the III International Conference on Security and Defense: Global Risks 2011, which is taking place at the Global Foundation for Development (FunGlode). 38 presentations by experts from 17 countries will be made during the conference. Key presenters are Abel Galvan, deputy prosecutor of organized crime from Baja California and Aymeric Chauprade, a French specialist on geopolitics.

The conference focuses on drug trafficking, arms trade, terrorism, migration and airport security, their global effects and the consequences of the problems.

Speaking at the event, Chauprade compared the Dominican Republic's problems with Haitian migration with France and Muslim migration. He said that drug trafficking now represents 8% of global commerce, worth more than US$400 billion a year. He estimated that there are 250 million consumers of illegal narcotics worldwide.
