The local credit data bureau says that only 4% of Dominicans default on formal debt acquired through the financial system. Jose Alberto Adam of Data Credito says that the best payers are borrowers who take on micro-credits, or poor people and micro- and small-scale business owners. The company monitors credit of more than three million people in the Dominican Republic, of a population of 10 million.
Adam said that most borrowers who default on their payments are in a difficult family situation (fired from work, sickness) or people who have money but do not want to pay (influential and powerful people). A third group defaults due to legal problems, as reported in El Dia.
