The administration is reported to have delivered a solution to the demands being made by the students, teachers and employees at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD). The Minister of Higher Education, Ligia Amada Melo de Cardona was received by the president of the UASD Federation of Professors' Associations, Ismael Peralta at a meeting that took place over the weekend.

According to El Nuevo Diario, one of the professors' union leaders, who did not want to be identified, said that the Fernandez administration was committed to obtaining a larger budget than the one contained in the just-approved 2012 National Budget.

This would allow the institution to provide for a 15% salary increase for professors and other employees as well as guaranteeing their Christmas bonus and the payment of the RD$23 million that the university owes to its professors. The newspaper was not able to obtain the opinion of UASD rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet, but the union president has convened an assembly of professors for 5pm this afternoon to discuss the issue.

The UASD has been rocked by disturbances for nearly a week and a half and more than 20 people have been injured and classes and administration work have been suspended.
