President Leonel Fernandez was in Samana yesterday for the inauguration of the new highway linking El Catey airport to Coson in Las Terrenas, Samana. The new stretch is part of the Boulevard Turistico del Atlantico that is said to cost US$151 million and is a toll road. Speaking at the event, President Fernandez compared the highway to views he saw when visiting Monaco. He called Samana "the Montecarlo of the Caribbean". He mentioned all the government investment in Samana in recent years, including the Santo Domingo-El Catey highway, the El Catey-Las Terrenas highway, the Las Terrenas-Sanchez highway and the road circuits, and the construction of aqueducts in Samana and Sanchez. He said all this should provide a boost for tourism development in the area. The new road cuts travel time to Las Terrenas by about half an hour and reduces the risk and stress of driving over the high hills of the peninsula.
