Over a 40-minute period at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico yesterday, the Dominican flag flew over the podium of the Olympic Stadium three times. First, Luguelin Santos, then Francia Manzanillo and then Yolanda Osana Valerio stepped onto the podium to receive one silver and two bronze medals. However, the day was not over for the Dominican athletes, since Dagoberto Aguero assured the team at least one silver medal for boxing in the 52kg category with his victory over his Brazilian opponent.
Luguelin Santos, who is just 17, set a world juvenile record and a Dominican national record in the 400-meter event. Francia Manzanillo won the bronze medal in the Women's Heptathlon and Osana Valerio won bronze in the 400-meter hurdles.
What makes this cascade of medals so newsworthy is the fact that before the games, only the Olympic gold medal winner Felix Sanchez and the national 4 x 400 meter relay team were expected to do anything. This chain of events bodes well of the future for Dominican athletics, since Sanchez is aiming for two golds and the 4 x 400 team expects to win a medal.
