Representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Public Works and the municipalities of Greater Santo Domingo announced measures to improve garbage collection in Greater Santo Domingo yesterday, as reported in El Nacional. Environment Minister Ernesto Reyna said that the Duquesa garbage dump would operate 24 hours a day, equipment would be increased to service the new schedule, and people access would be controlled when the trucks are unloading garbage.

Reyna also announced that the government has ordered the repaving of the La Isabela International Airport road, the alternative route to the dump. He announced that all food vending service at the dump site would be removed, to discourage people from hanging around at the site. Another measure is that all trucks transporting waste need to be sealed to avoid waste dropping off on the way to the dump. The trucks need to be washed to reduce the bad smell residents in the communities on the way to the dump are complaining about. The Ministry of Environment announced that worker brigades would be located on the roads to the dump to collect any garbage that may litter the route. He also announced that trees would be planted on the avenue leading from La Isabela Airport to the Mirador del Norte Park. He warned that any garbage transporters violating the dispositions would be taken to the dump with a military escort, and ordered to leave the truck and placed under arrest.
