Barometro Latinoamericano, a leading regional poll, reveals that the face-to-face polls conducted between 15 July and 16 August show the Dominican Republic in last place in confidence in the state by the citizens. The annual public opinion survey carried out 19,000 interviews in 18 Latin American countries.
Latinobarometro Corporation is a non-profit NGO based in Santiago, Chile, and is solely responsible for the production and publication of the data. It researches the development of democracy and economies as well as societies and uses indicators of opinion, attitudes, behavior and values.
As reported in El Caribe, the only country where citizens are more distrustful of their government is Guatemala. Only 15% of Dominican citizens think the country is progressing, while President Leonel Fernandez still has the approval of 36%, according to the survey. As to whether the situation of the country will improve in the next 12 months, the last year of Leonel Fernandez's eight-year administration, the DR ranked in last place of all the 18 countries polled. The DR tops the list for the number of young people under the age of 30 who do not study or work.
Coincidentally, on Friday Latin Trade magazine recognized President Leonel Fernandez for his successful career, with the Bravo Awards. Fernandez traveled to Miami to receive the award.
