Main causes of death in the Dominican Republic

Heart disease and traffic accidents are the main causes of death in the Dominican Republic. In the first 10 months of the year, 10,930 people have died, as reported in Diario Libre. The newspaper sourced preliminary data from the statistics bureau at the Ministry of Public Health that says that deaths this year are down when compared to 2010, when a total of 17,600 people died. Heart attacks (1,317 deaths) are responsible for 29% of deaths. Other causes include traffic accidents (395 deaths), encephalic vascular accident (358), pneumonia (356), pulmonary edema (226), intra-encephalic hemorrhage (212), undefined causes (194) and breast cancer (193).
